The Programme Management Portfolio - APM Group Accredited MSP Training
This workshop is designed to give delegates a basic understanding of the processes, components and techniques of the OGC methodology, Managing Successful Programmes (MSP). On the last day, delegates will undertake the OGC MSP Foundation examination.
Pre-requisites
The full MSP 5 day course is too intensive for some. It may be your job does not require you to have the in depth understanding provided by that course. Or, it may be your learning style is better suited to absorbing complex matters such as this in 2 parts. The Foundation course is specially designed with such needs in mind. Those who need to take their learning further can attend the MSP Practitioner Follow On Course.
Objectives
Attendance on this workshop will enable delegates to:
- Develop a basic understanding of the components, processes, products and techniques of MSP
- Have confidence and competence to help with and support the method in the live environment;
- Develop their knowledge of the material and undertake the MSP Foundation examination
At the end of the workshop, the delegate will be able to:
- Comprehend the fundamentals of using and tailoring MSP;
- Navigate the MSP material to maximise its usage as a working tool in the live environment
- The MSP Foundation examination is included within the course timetable.
Format
This is an introductory workshop providing realistic and practical skills consolidation.
The format of the event is highly interactive and designed to present the information in memorable, manageable segments. Through the use of exercises which mimic the Foundation examination format, delegates will be given full opportunity to test their understanding of MSP.
Like the OGC Prince2 Project Management standard, MSP is designed to be implemented in a tailored fashion. Any organisation or individual seeing the need for a controlled approach to managing its programmes will benefit from an understanding of the MSP methodology.
Delegates will be provided with comprehensive supporting material.
Pre-course Work
All delegates should complete the pre-course questions provided by Aim academy, and have read the MSP Manual.. This will involve a minimum of 6 hours pre-course study.

Programme management is an approach to change management that turns loosely defined business objectives into targeted tactical changes.
Programme management is an approach to management that bridges the gap between higher level strategic objectives and lower level tactical delivery.
Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) covers:
- roles and responsibilities at senior management and programme delivery levels
- governance regimes that deliver control without bureaucracy
- close links between programme manager and operational managers
- definition and management of benefits that bridge the gap between strategic objectives and the changes to tactical capabilities required
- a portfolio of projects that deliver the capabilities.
The benefits of adopting MSP include:
- improvement in productivity
- promotion of links between long range plans and day to day delivery
- promotion of delegated empowerment of staff
- balance of business requirements with stakeholder needs
- provision of a rational framework for resolving stakeholder conflicts.
There are currently three qualifications available for MSP; Foundation, Practitioner and Advanced Practitioner.
Candidates must always take the Foundation Examination before the Practitioner and Advanced Practitioner Examinations, either on the same day or separately. If a candidate has previously passed the Foundation Examination, they are qualified to sit the Practitioner and Advanced Practitioner Examinations without the need to re-sit the Foundation Examination.
If a candidate chooses to sit the Foundation Examination only, and passes, they will receive a "Foundation Examination" certificate stating that they have passed. However, if a candidate sits the Foundation Examination, Practitioner and Advanced Practitioner Examination on the same day, and passes all three, they will receive a "Advanced Practitioner Examination" certificate, but not any other certificate.
